Outstanding Farmer of the Year Winner Jeff Aiken

For seven years now, the Kingsport Times-News and the Johnson City Press has given farmers the opportunity to gain recognition for their hard work and knowledge about agriculture through participation in our Outstanding Farmer of the Year Program. This program rewards farmers for their commitment to excellence in the agriculture industry and their efficiency in farming practices, sound financial management, and leadership in civic organizations.

The winner along with first runner up and second runner up was acknowledged at our 16^th annual Farm Expo at MeadowViewConvention Center in Kingsport, TN. January 18. 2013. Lawson Building Supply, Inc. and Kubota Equipment makes this award possible by providing $1,000, a Kubota jacket, and an engraved plaque to the Outstanding Farmer of the Year winner. Outstanding Farmer of the Year went to Scott Aiken from Washington County, TN. First runner up is sponsored by Farm Credit Bureau of Mid America & Farm Credit Bureau of the Virginias and went to Scott Widener from Washington County, VA. Second runner up sponsored by C & C Custom Trailers went to Jerry (Petie) Southerland from Greene County, TN.

The Farmer of the Year contest is open to all farmers in the Southwest Virginia counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Russell, and Washington, and in Northeast Tennessee, Hawkins, Sullivan, Washington, Carter, Unicoi, Johnson, and Greene. There are many innovative and successful farmers in this region and this program seeks to recognize them for their outstanding farming operations and leadership in our industry.

Calling All Kids!

Come on out to the 16th annual Farm Expo and enjoy the 4-H Playland and Petting zoo, remember to bring your camera and take lots of cool pics with the animals. Friday night the 18th is the Little Kids Tractor Pedal Pull for ages 3-10. Saturday the 19th is the Turkey Calling Contest for all ages and Sunday there will be FREE Ice Cream Sundaes provided by Marble Slab Creamery, Yummy!

Visit with Marriot the Rooster and play ole timey games provided by The Exchange Place.

Farm Expo 2013 will be held January 18-19-20 at MeadowView Convention Center in Kingsport.

Farm Expo 2013 Is Coming!

Farm Expo is Coming! 16 Years of Farming and Fun!

Farm Expo will celebrate sixteen great years of farming and family fun with Farm Expo 2013, coming toMeadowViewConvention CenterinKingsportJanuary 18-20. The weekend will feature the latest farm, lawn, and garden equipment, products, and services; free farming and gardening seminars, and a host of both old and new activities for the entire family.

MeadowViewConvention Centerwill be filled with trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, ATVs, horse trailers, bailers, and all sorts of farming/gardening related equipment and products. The Country Fair and Ladies Market will feature Country Cooking, shopping for everything from home & garden décor, bird houses, homemade soaps, candles, jewelry, purses and cosmetics.

Kids will love the 4-H Playland and Petting Zoo, featuring live animals, lots of fun and games. This kids’ area will open for the weekend at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 18 and parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras.

A host of old favorites will also return to Farm Expo – an 1850s Farmstead presented by Exchange Place, the First Frontier Quilters of Kingsport, the Little Kids’ Tractor Pull, Turkey-Callin’ Contests, Sunday afternoon Ice Cream Social, and Sunday Singing.

Agricultural Extension agents and master gardeners will present free farming and gardening seminars. Extension agents and master gardeners will also be available throughout the weekend to visit and answer questions from the public.

The Appalachian Whitetail Association will score bucks free all weekend, hold deer scoring workshops on Saturday and award prizes for the best bucks on Sunday afternoon. Bucks must be harvested this past season to compete in this contest.

Lawson Building Supply/Kubota will announce the winner of the Farmer of the Year Award on the main stage Saturday.

Outstanding Farmer of the Year Award

In association with the Cooperative Extension Programs of Tennessee-Virginia

Introduction and Purpose:

The purpose of this program is to recognize exemplary efforts of our farmers in Northeast Tennessee-Southwest Virginia, specifically in the counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Russell, and Washington in Virginia, and Hawkins, Sullivan, Washington, Carter, Unicoi, Johnson, and Greene in Tennessee. We are looking for those farmers who can be identified as having a real “heart” for farming. The identification, selection and recognition will be a joint effort of the agricultural related sister agencies in Northeast Tennessee-Southwest Virginia and the Kingsport Times-News. In that effort, the Kingsport Times-News invites you to support farmers by participating in the Farmer of the Year Award Program. You are invited to nominate one outstanding farmer from your county to compete for this award.

The award selection will be presented at Farm Expo 2014, the 17th year of Farm Expo. The event will be held on January 17-18-19, 2014, at MeadowView Convention Center in Kingsport, TN. Your support is critical to the success of this program. The eligibility guidelines are listed below and the one page nomination form is enclosed. The completed nomination form must be received by November 15, 2013 at the address given at the bottom of the application.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for this award, the producer must meet the following guidelines:
a) The farm operated by the nominee must be located in the counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Russell, and Washington in Virginia, or Hawkins, Sullivan, Washington, Carter, Unicoi, Johnson and Greene in Tennessee.
b) The Producer/Family members must have an active role in the labor and/or management for
the farm.
c) Operated by a family dependent on farming for a significant but not
necessarily a majority of its income.
d) Open farming operation to field visits by judges at requested times.

Nominations:

a) The person nominating must include the attached nomination form and a typed or handwritten
narrative describing why this farmer should be nominated.
